MOL League: Debreceni HK Preview
2016-09-06 10:46 - icehockey.hu

Debrecen is heading into their third season in the MOL League and they made the playoffs in their first two season however there are only six players left from the MOL league debut season. After back to back fourth place finishes at the end of the regular season, the club would like to finish closer to the top and place in the finals would be nice as well.

Last season was very much up and down for Debrecen last season as Coach Muhin had left to be an assistant coach in the KHL, after a fast start for the club things slowed down and Muhin Was brought back to the organization which lead to a fourth place regular season finish. This year he has his players all throughout the roster.

Last season the backbone of the the team was the goaltending as Ádám Vay played lights out with Savva Borodin being a solid backup and Péter Nagy played great when he was called upon in the playoffs. Vay has left to join the Minnesota Wild organization and Borodin was not brought back either. The club isn’t ready to hand the number one spot over to the Nagy, who is only 18, yet. The starts will be split between two established MOL League goalies is József Pleszkán and Dávid Gyenes, both who were acquired during the offseason.

There has been an overhaul on the back end as only Zsolt Wéber and Péter Hetényi are back from last season, they added experienced EBEL defenceman Arnold Varga along with three former KHL players in Artyom Bezrukov, Vyacheslav Seluyanov and Pavel Voroshnin. This gives the team three solid defencive pairings, which provides depth in an area that is essential in the MOL League.

The up front Debercen replaced all of their imports except for Martin Saluga, the veteran MOL League forward is back for his second season with the club. Most of the Hungarian core is back as well with Norbert Dancsfalvi, Norbert Hári, Ákos Berta and Artyom Vaszjunyin improve upon what they did last season. Some of the scoring will also be pick up by the Russia forwards that were brought in. It is clear that based off of the resumes that they posses Debrecen will be scoring a lot more than they did in the past. Sergei Kochetkov, Alexei Kosourov and sergei Piskunov all have KHL playing experience as well. Viktor Kovács is a solid defensive forward and look for Péter T. Vincze to have a breakout season.

The Debrecen management can be happy with what the club has produced in the first two seasons but it is time to raise the bar and take the next step forward as an organization and a club.

Head Coach Evgeni Muhin: When I first came to Debrecen I noticed a number of things were missing that is needed to do quality work. A lot has changed since then and now we can accomplish more in this environment. I see that the success has motivated not only the players but also the people involved with the club. The development and the improvement not only on the ice but also mentally can be seen as well. The roster has gotten stronger during the offseason, but it will still be determined if this is also reflected in the standings as well. I can only really comment on the play of the players I know, the ones from last season. On paper we have some good imports but I can't give an accurate evaluation after only a couple of weeks. I hope everyone will do everything that is needed to achieve the goals that we set. I would be happy if we finish in the top two after the regular season and make it to the playoff finals.

Norbert Dancsfalvi, Forward: I think we will be great this season, our core Hungarian players and Martin Saluga stayed with the team, during the preseason games the import players showed what they can do. The goalie position will not be a problem and all of our defesncmen are players who can support the team from behind and can also score points. Defence is the basis of everything if we are solid on the back end then we can also attack easily. I expect the same level of play from myself that I have been able to bring the past couple of seasons. I would like to score more goals and points than last season. I feel that the new 11 team league is very strong, but we expect to reach the semifinals at least and of course to win the league.

*Expert Opinion:There was a lot of turnover on the roster from last season, both their goalies have left and we all know that one of them left for an NHL contract. The team plays a very defensive style of play especially on the smaller home ice, which works great for them. The coach has a very Russian style in which they work hard and the coach is very strict. Which is the opposite of the positive North American style, practices might not be as fun as it is with other teams. If we look at the results it seems to work as they had a great first year and improved last season. They will have a strong team and they will be hard to beat. On paper the imports will be better than last season which should be a great addition.
